Organic farming support in the Walloon Region

French speaking chamber on November 4, 2020

The Belgian Court of Audit examined the support granted by the Walloon Region to the organic farming sector. During the last decade, there has been a sharp rise in organic farming activities. The number of organic farms and the total areas of organic agricultural land have more than tripled since 2006 and the consumption of organic products has substantially increased; however, the Court noted that the organic farming support policy lacks vision for the medium and long terms. The current support is actually more an assistance than a strong orientation towards the future development of organic farming. The Court also considers that the systemic risks to developing organic farming in the Walloon Region remain significant. In addition, the sustainability of the financial organic farming support is not guaranteed beyond 2020.
