The Court of Audit examined the cost for the Flemish Region of the extra measures taken by the Flemish Government to deal with the refugee influx in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, the cost appeared to amount to almost 100 million euro, excluding, however, some expenditure. Moreover, some refugee expenditure were not incurred through new credits but via existing ones that were not exclusively intended for that purpose. The Court of Audit concluded that the Flemish authorities appropriately estimated, coordinated and monitored the refugee reception credits. The refugee influx will also lead to higher public expenditure in the coming years.
