At the Flemish Parliament’s request, the Court of Audit has examined the au pair schemes for young people. The current rules applied to non-European au pairs are of a hybrid nature: au pair programmes combine cultural exchanges and light housework. However, both notions are not sufficiently well-defined, what makes controls more difficult. The competent authorities should provide a better legal framework. Moreover, they should also focus on European au pairs, for whom legislative provisions still have to be laid down.
