The Belgian Court of Audit has examined in its report to the Federal Parliament the policy on prescribing and dispensing antibiotics for human use, as Belgium remains one of the largest consumers of antibiotics among European countries. The more frequent antibiotics are used, the more resistant bacteria become to the action of these drugs. In our country, such resistance has been responsible for hundreds of deaths every year. The policy pursued so far has not proved effective in limiting the use of antibiotics. The Court therefore recommends that the federal institutions implement proven measures to increase the quality of prescriptions and reduce the quantity of antibiotics that are dispensed in pharmacy unnecessarily.
