Alignment of benefits for cohabitants with those for singles – An estimate of the budgetary impact pursuant to the resolution of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives of 16 March 2023 (DOC 55 3098/006)

During its plenary session of 16 March 2023, the Belgian Chamber of Representatives passed a resolution asking the Belgian Court of Audit to examine the budgetary impact of aligning benefits for cohabitants with those for singles. On the basis of the Court’s calculation, the gross impact of the increase in benefits amounts to 1.9 billion euro. As for budget items, the impact is greatest on health and disability insurance, followed by financial support granted to those with poor income and unemployment.
