The Belgian Court of Audit performed an audit on the Walloon Region's funding of research projects carried out by companies, universities and other tertiary education facilities, and approved research centres. These projects specifically focus on applied research, which is expected to lead to real-world solutions, whereas fundamental research projects mainly focus on expanding knowledge and fall within the remit of the French Community. The applied research projects are commonly funded through subsidies or recoverable advances, which are referred to as “aid for research”.
