Réduction des compétences des provinces

Dutch speaking chamber on February 20, 2018

Since January 1st, 2018, provinces have lost their competences over people-related matters such as welfare, culture, sports and youth. The Belgian Court of Audit has taken a closer look on how the Flemish government has transferred these competences to the Flemish authorities and local governments. The administrative reorganisation turned out to be complicated in practice: there could not be one uniform approach for all provinces and competences, especially not for well-established provincial institutions. Some of them could not even be transferred eventually and for the others, the provinces have not been duly compensated.
